Hellgate Canyon - Merlin OR
Located on the beautiful Rogue River off of Galice Road, Hellgate Canyon is a spectacular site and a must stop viewpoint. With multiple locations to jump off rocks into the water, the area “Hellgate Canyon” stretches approximately 27 miles along the Rogue River starting a little west of Grants Pass Oregon.
The first Hellgate Canyon Viewpoint is about 1 mile north of Hog Creek, right off Galice road, and overlooks the canyon. The second viewpoint is about 700 meters down river, with easy access to the water so you can get out and enjoy the flowing water. Along this beautiful stretch of the Rogue there are 4 developed camping spots- Alameda County Park, Rocky Bar, Ennis County Park, and Indian Mary County Park. In addition you are allowed to camp up to 14 days anywhere that is public land but make sure to do your research- private properties are scattered all along this stretch of which you cannot camp on.
Directions to Hellgate Canyon
Hellgate Canyon Viewpoint is 7 minutes northwest of Merlin Oregon. Exit 62
GPS: 42°32'37.7"N 123°30'48.1"W
FROM I5 (interstate 5 freeway)
- Get onto I5 and head towards Merlin Oregon
- Take Exit 62 onto Merlin Rd
- Follow Merlin Rd for ~3.5 miles and keep left onto Galice Rd
- Merlin road turns into Galice Rd right after Little Pantry
- Follow Galice Rd for 5.5 miles
- There is a turnout to your left right after the bend (to the left)
- There is a second turnout about 700 meters after the first viewpoint
